We’re celebrating our partnership with St Basils over the past 12 months. We’ve taken a look back at how we started working together in April 2018 and what’s happened since then.

At UK Power Reserve, part of Sembcorp Group, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an integral part of our ethos. Our CSR strategy is built on three pillars of People, Communities, and Sustainable Development.

  • People: Supporting voluntary efforts (through match funding), training, on-going development and ensuring health and safety for all employees.
  • Communities: Strengthening ties with local stakeholders in communities near our offices and areas of operation.
  • Sustainable Development: Ensuring a renewable future and developing ourselves as a responsible business.

In early 2018, we realised there was much more we could do to increase our CSR efforts to help the local community surrounding our head office in Solihull.

There were more than 400 rough sleepers in the West Midlands in 2018, representing a 42% increase from the previous year[1]. With such a rise, more support is needed too. We reached out to St Basils, a charity that works with young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and our partnership was subsequently formed.

St Basils helps in excess of 5,000 young people each year across the West Midlands region with specific services in Birmingham, Sandwell, Walsall, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, the Wyre Forest, Coventry, and Solihull. The Solihull hub was opened in 2017 to help meet the rising demand of the Birmingham hub and over 1,000 young people have visited since its opening; 400 of whom visited since April 2018.

Supporting St Basils in Solihull

Our activities to help St Basils during our partnership have included:

  • Paying the monthly electricity bill for their Solihull hub for 2018/19 – this total £9,300 donation accounted for 21% of the hub’s running costs.
  • Donating over 50 laptops, 6 screens, and 3 PCs to help vulnerable young people write CVs in an effort to change their circumstances.
  • Raising awareness about the organisation and the causes and effects of homelessness, through a site visit by UK Power Reserve employees to the charity’s Solihull hub.
  • Collecting donations of essential items such as toothpaste, deodorant, and soap from our staff in the run up to Christmas 2018, which contributed to more than 50 starter packs that St Basils put together for young people.
  • Holding a Bake-Off-style fundraiser, which raised more than £200 and was judged by a representative from St Basils who also spoke to our team about the charity.

We’re proud to have supported St Basils over the past 12 months and are grateful for the fantastic work they do in the West Midlands region.

Fatima Iqbal, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at UK Power Reserve commented, “We’re delighted to have supported St Basils for the past year through donations and helping to raise awareness of their services in our local area. We’ll continue to support the Solihull hub by sharing details of fundraising events with all our employees.

Barrie Hodge, Head of Fundraising at St Basils said, “We are overwhelmed by the generosity of UK Power Reserve. Their incredible offer to pay over £9,000 to cover the Solihull Hub’s electricity bill means more money to spend on vital services to prevent homelessness. At St Basils we strongly believe that homelessness should not be part of growing up, unfortunately it is a reality for so many 16-25 year olds today. Every penny UK Power Reserve saved us will help support young people in the area, ensuring they have the tools and skills they need to rebuild their lives and live independently”.
